Planting Instructions

Plant daffodil bulbs in borders, containers and grassy areas where they naturalise well. In pots, all daffodils need cool conditions because excess heat makes the flower buds die.

Narcissi flower best in a sunny spot in neutral to alkaline soil that is well-drained, fertile and retains some moisture while the bulb is growing.

Daffodils should be planted about 10-15 cm deep. In grass where they are to be naturalised and in sandy soils, you can go up to 5 cms deeper.

It is a good idea to water in dry spring weather, as later flowering bulbs may not flower if they are too dry. To increase bulbs size for the following year, dead-head as soon as the flowers fade. Allow the leaves to die back for at least 6-8 weeks before mowing.

You can also apply a high potash fertiliser in the growing season to bulk up the bulb for the following year. Lift, divide and replant clumps of bulbs if flowering is poor or the bulbs are overcrowded.
