About 'Rouge Cardinal' Clematis:

'Rouge Cardinal' Clematis is a vigorous variety of clematis. It produces a stunning show of deep crimson flowers with deep cut midribs and pale cream anthers. They are quite a size too, reaching to around 15cm in diameter. These are produced in profusion through summer and into autumn and are followed by lovely spindly seedheads.

'Rouge Cardinal' is quite a late flowering Clematis - if you'd like to find something to compliment it with an earlier show of blooms why not browse our full range here.

Great for your garden:

'Rouge Cardinal' is a nice strong growing vigorous variety. This makes it perfect for covering large frames such as trellis', pergolas and archways. It looks really nice when grown with other climbers, especially roses.

Being a strong grower that likes partial shade it's a great choice for growing through a host tree. You can also let it ramble through a large shrub in the border.

  • Look out for:

All Clematis may come under attack from caterpillars, earwigs and aphids form time to time. Remove by hand where possible, and spray if infestations get really bad.

May have some susceptibility to Clematis wilt. Avoid through mulching every year for good deep roots. Cut out any infected stems and destroy immediately, disinfect tools.

Slime flux can occasionally be a problem. Damaged growth can be infected causing a smelly ooze from the affected area. Affected stems can be cut back to a healthy shoot, the infected material destroyed.

    Trivia:

'Rouge Cardinal' was bred in 1968 by Alexandre Girault of France, who is a lot better known for his contributions to rose breeding.
