Description

Lonicera Heckrottii

Lonicera x heckrottii Goldflame is a lovely climbing honeysuckle with excellent orange/yellow tubular flowers held in whorls over blue/green foliage. It is heavily scented, strong and fast growing but needs support. It will thrive in full sun or partial shade and is at home in acid or alkaline soil as long as the roots are kept moist but not waterlogged.

It will grow to an eventual height of 6m and is disease free and deer resistant. During the evening the scent will attract moths and, during the day, bees, butterflies and ladybirds will feed on the nectar. In hot summers red berries will appear that are much beloved of birds.

Great for your garden:

Goldflame is an exceptionally beautiful honeysuckle with orange/yellow highly scented tubular flowers shown off well against blue/green foliage. It grows very fast but needs support and so is best on a pergola or arch, against a fence, a wall or over railings.

Its luxuriant growth habit requires that it grows alone with space to expand. The scent is strong, particularly in the evening, so it is a very good plant to have near a sitting area or doorway and it is also the perfect cottage garden plant for a woodland or wildlife area.

Features:

  • Bushy deciduous or semi-evergreen blue/green foliage
  • Beautiful orange/yellow trumpet flowers spring to autumn
  • Will grow to an eventual height and spread of 6m
  • Lovely strong perfume
  • Full hardy
  • Needs support
  • Sun or partial shade
  • Origins unknown but supposed to be a cross between Lonicera sempervirens and Lonicera americana
  • RHS Award of Garden Merit

Look out for:

'Goldflame' may, as with all honeysuckles, suffer from mildew but, in view of its attraction to wildlife, only biological controls should be used.

Trivia:

It is also known as 'American Beauty' due to its supposed parentage of Lonicera sempervirens and Lonicera americana.

Planting and Care Instructions

How to grow Lonicera 'Goldflame':

Lonicera x heckrottii 'Goldflame' is a climber best planted where it can be given support.

  • Plant on a pergola or arch or attach it to a trellis against a wall.
  • It needs moisture at its roots but free-draining soil and a position in full sun or partial shade.
  • Plant it in a hole larger than the rootball.
  • Backfill with good quality compost, having incorporated a handful of bonemeal.
  • Firm in and water well.
  • A mulch of 2" to 3" at planting and, again, in spring and summer will be beneficial.
  • Cut flowered shoots back by 1/3rd in the autumn.
