Giants in the Garden

Temple of Beauty, bred by leading tulip hybridiser Dirk W. Lefeber in 1959, was the tallest tulip breeders had ever seen. Over the next few years more cultivars were added to the Giant Lefeber Hybrid Range including Hocus Pocus with its sulphurous petals lit with red flames and the elegant apricot-pink Big Brother.

Tulips perform best in containers and borders. They prefer fertile soil with good drainage.

Planting depth for Temple of Beauty bulbs should be three times their height. If you want to keep plants for the following year, plant even more deeply, around 20cm and deadhead spent flowers. Many varieties will stay in the ground and multiply happily, but if you are in doubt, lift them when the foliage has withered.

Dry them off in a dark, dry, cool place, remove any dried soil and store them (in the dark at a low room temperature) in a tray or net, having first removed any diseased or damaged bulbs. Space bulbs 8cm apart, the equivalent of 50-60 per sq. metre. Make sure the pointy end of the bulb faces upwards

Applying a high potash fertiliser during the growing season improves the flowering performance the next year. Lift and divide clumps of tulips if flowering is poor
