Named after Claude Aubriet (1651-1742), who was France's royal botanical painter for 28 years.
There is another species with the common name rock cress, Arabis alpina, so to distinguish them Aubretia is also known as false rock cress.
If you are ever in Stalbridge, Dorset, there is a magnificent long wall of Aubretia on Church Hill that is a tourist attraction all by itself.
