Hosta Patriot

You won't be alone if you love Hosta Patriot - it's one of the most popular variegated hostas ever introduced. This plantain lily is a clump-forming perennial forming a mound of large, oval, puckered, olive green leaves with irregular cream margins.

Growing to 55cm tall, the lovely foliage is capped by spikes of funnel-shaped, lavender-blue flowers from July-August. Hostas look very good providing ground cover under roses.

Great In Your Garden...

Smaller hostas - like Patriot - are invaluable for the shady patio garden, as they will grow happily in pots, giving interest, structure and colour from spring until autumn. Surround the pot with some copper tape to protect leaves from slug damage.

They're adaptable enough to look good in cottage gardens or in formal settings, Japanese-style arrangements along with Acers and ferns.

Perfectly at home in a wildlife or woodland garden, use Patriot in a low-maintenance garden if you live in a wetter part of the country (it doesn't like to dry out).

A collection of hostas makes excellent weed-suppressant ground cover for shady and semi-shady spots and Patriot looks lovely next to a pond or water feature. The leaves also provide coverage for dying bulb foliage.

Did You Know...

Hostas were named after Nicholas Thomas Host in 1812. They were briefly reclassified as Funkia in 1817 but this name wasn't popular and reverted to hosta. Funkia, however, is still used in some Eastern European countries today.

Likes rich, well-drained but moist soil in shaded/semi-shaded position. Add compost when planting and keep well watered until established and during dry spells.

In spring, apply general purpose fertiliser and mulch well. Remove dead flower heads. Protect from slugs and snails. Divide large clumps from autumn-early spring.
