Perennial delphiniums produce spiky rockets of flowers in June and July 5-6 feet tall, and can be encouraged to repeat in late summer. Perfect at the back of the border, planted in groups of 3-4 of the same colour for a fantastic mass display.

They demand full sun, so give them a little space, and like a rich, well drained soil. Clay, located on a slope or mound that sheds water, is fine when broken up and mixed with grit.

Blackmore & Landon, founded by James Blackmore and Charles Langdon in 1901 is by Appointment to HRH The Prince of Wales, who is also the Delphinium Society's patron. The business partners met at the Bath Flower Show when they were breeding begonias, and the company is still in their grand children's hands over a century later. We do stock other lovely Delphiniums, but the multi-award-winning Blackmore & Landon varieties are usually the first to sell out!

The delphiniums we grow need reasonably sturdy support. This is best given by rigid metal hoops with legs driven into the ground until the hoop is about 50-75cm above the soil. These support the flower stems in staying upright and quite close together while allowing them to sway in the wind, which makes them tougher than if you stake them higher. But staking and tying them in higher also works well enough if you don't have made-for-purpose hoops available and may be best in more exposed locations.

For staggered height towards the back of the border, lupins are a classic companion.
