Privet is probably the best evergreen hedge plant for urban areas. It grows in compacted, polluted soil next to roads and tolerates more shade than almost anything else. Green privet or variegated golden privet are the preferred choices in towns as they are truly evergreen, work well as screening plants and can be clipped to make smart formal hedges. Privet hedges grow quickly and forgive overzealous clipping. In the country, wild privet, while not as evergreen as the other two, carries masses of black fruit into the winter which are loved by birds. Privet hedges are best kept to about 2-3 metres.
Take a look at our other hedging plants.
Privet hedging is one of the easiest ways to create fast-growing, smart, evergreen barriers around your garden. However, easy to grow as privet may be, you will get a much better end result if it is properly planted.
You can start with privet cuttings, but that will add 2-3 years to your timescales, so better by far to use bare root privet hedge plants that will establish very fast and are much more economical than privet grown in pots. The planting season for bare-rooted hedging is from October up to the beginning of April.
Prepare the planting area really well; privet may be tough but it is enormously greedy and rewards you with rapid lush growth if it is started in soil that has plenty of added organic matter. Get rid of larger stones, perennial weeds, tree roots and other detritus at the same time.
Plant privet hedging in a single row at 3 plants per metre.
Put your privet in a bucket of cool water an hour before planting and then take them out as you need them. Dig a trench just a little wider but no deeper than the roots. put the plants in the trench and return the soil around the plants, firming it down well making sure the finished soil level is the same as when they were lifted. Water privet hedging really well immediately after planting and, until it has established and is growing away, whenever the weather is dry.
As soon as you see the first new leaves emerging, trim your plants down by about a third to make them bushier at the base. After that, clip the sides 2-3 times a year and the top once a year until your privet hedge has reached the desired height. Thereafter, trim as required.
