Heuchera 'Black Pearl' (Primo Series). 2-Litre Pot-Grown Plants

It is almost impossible to find a truly black plant but this rare pearl is one of the closest, with the darkest hue on the top of the foliage; the underside is deep purple-red, flashes of which are visible due to the wavy scalloped shape of the leaf edges. The oldest leaves have a slightly silvery sheen.

Growing 'Black Pearl' Heucheras

These undemanding plants need a well-drained soil, ideally on the sandy/gritty side, with neutral to mildly acidic pH.
They like some dappled shade at midday: given shelter and moist soil, full sun by itself will do little damage to the foliage, but a combination of full sun, wind and dry soil tends to scorch it.

In mild conditions heuchera keeps its leaves through winter. Tidy tired-looking leaves each spring.

In Your Garden Design

Here's one to have fun with, perhaps creating a flowing block of them to resemble a river, contrasting with vivid green Heucheras such as 'Lime Marmalade', or planting with zinging, variegated hostas. The Primo series is made up of larger, more vigorous than average varieties, with ostentatious leaves to make a striking mark in the border, although they are happy in containers too. Good for edging paths too. Plant with a geranium chocolate candy and a Carex milk chocolate.

Did You Know?

Heucheras are native to North America and the Primo series was bred by Hans Hansen, director of new plant development at Walters Gardens in Michigan, from Heuchera villosa.

Dig in garden compost or leaf mould when planting, in semi-shade. Space 30-40cm apart and water in well. Keep watered until established. Cut down spent stems after flowering. Divide congested clumps in spring and mulch around the crown with organic matter.
