Delivery season: Clematis are delivered in pots year round, when in stock. It is usually best not to plant out pot-grown plants in winter, but to keep them until Spring, because they will establish faster in warm soil and give you better first-year growth.

Choosing a size: Small plants are cheaper and more forgiving of less than ideal aftercare, so they are best for a big planting project. If instant impact is your priority, or if you are only buying a few plants for use in a place where it is convenient to water them well in their first year, then you may as well use bigger ones. All our climbing plants come in standard pot sizes.

Growing 'Chantilly' Clematis

It will be happiest in alkaline or neutral soil. Fully hardy, it is best to plant it out of full sun in the South because too much sun, especially at midday, tends to fade the colour.

In Your Garden Design

Clematis are a wonderful feature to add to any garden because they are so versatile in their use: they be planted around archways, up pergolas, around trees trunks, alongside climbing roses, along fences or walls and woven in shrubs. They are natural companion plants to roses: try Chantilly with a raspberry cream twirl to create a raspberry ripple effect, although any rose will do, just choose one that flowers roughly the same time. A good shrub to match it with is a spindleberry or ceanothus. You can even plant them in a veg patch alongside lettuce to give your home "allotment" a bit of cottage garden chic.

As well as the sweet whipped cream for which Chantilly, a town in the French region historically known as Picardy and now Hauts-de-France, is famous, the name is synonymous with a finely detailed silk lace. The lace was actually largely produced elsewhere, but it's the brand that counts.
